With lots of fun things to do in St. Pete Beach, head to Treasure Island this autumn for the Sand Sculpting Competition & Music Festival. It’s a great opportunity to see some amazing works of art in the sand. Held every year in the middle of November, it’s a great outing to take the whole family too. Plus, it’s a fantastic free event full of music, vendors, and lots of sand!
If you’re into art and sculpture, this event is perfect. There will be around 10 participants in the Sand Sculpting competition. You’ll be able to see massive works of art made entirely out of the sand. The 8th annual Sand Sculpting Competition will be November 16-20th.
Starting on Wednesday, November 16th, the sculptors will begin the ‘build-up’ process. Collecting sand and water, then molding it into the sculptors’ preferred shapes. Over the course of three days, these sculptors will have 24 hours to create beautiful masterpieces of work that are worthy of the #1 prize. Last year, the artists had 12 tons of pure white sand to work with. This specific sand came from Davenport, FL, and they also had an 18’x18’ space to create their sandy sculptures. After setting up their space on Wednesday night there will be a meet and greet at the Crystal Sands Ballroom at the Bilmar Beach Resort. This 10$ event lets you munch on snacks from Sloppy Joe’s and get to know the sculptors.
Thursday allows for the competition to begin. With the start of sculpting on Thursday, there won’t be many vendors set up quite yet. Though it is an early look at the competition, it’s definitely worth checking out. You’ll be able to watch the process that these talented artists go through to create their massive works of art. Friday kicks off the music part of the weekend events. With blues, rock, and a Kenny Chesney Tribute Band, you’ll enjoy the musical accompaniment during the sculpting.
