Seashell hunting is a fan favorite here in Florida. Not only is it popular along the coast but it’s a great way to spend you days outside. Winter offers a wonderful time to hit the beach. During the winter months, Florida visitor rate is low, especially in our fantastic coastal towns. So you’ll get ample time spent on the beach this winter.
Seek to Sea More!
Beachcombing or shelling is the practice of scouring the beach to find whatever catches your eye. There is a lot to look for when you’re on the beach! Not only can you find beautiful shells of all colors and sizes, but you could also find some amazing sea glass. Sea glass is pieces of washed up glass that have tumbled their way onto the beach from the sea. Over time, the glass becomes frosted and smooth. Sea glass comes in all different colors, like you typical clear or brown. Sometimes you find the special ones, where the green or blue tints are reminiscent of the beach you’re sitting on.
If you’re really into beachcombing, you might want to bring a shell identification book along with you. These books can help identify some of the common seashells you’ll find at the beach. We’re sure you’ll find everything from conch shells to clam shells, starfish, and sand dollars. Just make sure that there are no living marine creatures inside the shells. As it is prohibited from taking live marine animals.
